Last week, Channel View played host to a vibrant and engaging consultation event focused on improving children’s experiences in urban environments. Organised in partnership with the AtkinsRéalis Research and Innovation Team, and supported by Cardiff Council’s Housing and Regeneration Team, the event brought together children, families, and professionals to explore how young people navigate their communities.
The consultation centered on children’s wayfinding, including their routes to school and play areas, and encouraged participants to think creatively about safety, seasons, fun, and accessibility. Through interactive workshops and mapping activities, children shared their perspectives on what makes a neighbourhood feel welcoming, safe, and easy to explore.
Adding a splash of creativity, Printhaus joined the event with a hands-on t-shirt printing activity, allowing children to express their ideas visually and take home a personalised memento of the day. Insights gathered from the event will directly inform a new framework aimed at improving children’s wellbeing in urban environments, aligning with Cardiff’s commitment to a Child Rights-Based Approach and the UNICEF UK Child Friendly Cities Initiative. This work also supports the council’s wider goals of building a Stronger, Fairer, Greener Cardiff.
