Young People Shape Cardiff’s Scrutiny Work

View all news...

Last year, over 180 children and young people from schools and youth groups across Cardiff shared their views in a city-wide survey. The feedback helped shape what the Council’s scrutiny committees talked about throughout the year – making sure the things that matter to young people were on the agenda.

Here’s what happened next:

Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Committee

This committee focuses on issues that directly affect children and young people – especially around children’s social services, schools, and education.

Your feedback helped shape discussions on:

  • Additional Learning Needs (ALN)

  • Children who are carers

  • Children who are looked after

  • Whether schools are good places to be and meet your needs

  • How adults can listen, talk, and give better feedback to young people

The committee is currently looking at:

  • New school proposals and school maintenance

  • Corporate parenting

  • Period dignity

  • Ensuring sport for all

  • School improvement

  • School transport

  • Accommodation for children who are looked after

They’re also carrying out a major Inquiry into Additional Learning Needs.

Communities and Adult Services Scrutiny Committee

This committee picked up on the issues you raised around housing and homelessness.

As a result, they looked at:

  • Cardiff’s Housing Allocation Policy and the current housing waiting list

  • Council house rent and service charges

  • Homeless provision and planning for winter

  • The Housing Emergency in Cardiff

Economy and Culture Scrutiny Committee

Your views were taken into account during planning meetings, and the committee asked the Principal Scrutiny Officer (PSO) to remind members about what young people had said when those issues came up.

They made sure your feedback was considered when reviewing:

  • The Corporate Plan and Budget Proposals

  • Hubs and Library Strategy

  • Central South Active Partnership

  • Leisure Centres

  • Roath Recreation Ground

Environmental Scrutiny Committee

This committee focused on the environment and climate change, and used your ideas to shape their work.

They looked at:

  • The One Planet Cardiff Strategy

  • Improvements for cycling

  • Flood risk

  • Bus reform

  • Monitoring air quality

  • Electric vehicles

  • Local energy plans

Thanks to your voices, these important topics were explored in detail – helping to make Cardiff a better, fairer, and more child-friendly city. This is your right to be heard in action (Article 12 of the UNCRC) – and we’re proud to say your input made a real difference.
